Allegations
of election rigging is not new in India. Most of the time parties who loose
elections complain about rigging of elections. It was alleged by opposition parties
(Jan Sangh included) that illegal ballot papers & inks were sourced from Russia
to rig 1971 general Election elections in favor of Indira Gandhi. Opposition
parties in Bihar had similar complaints about changing of ballot boxes in 95
Bihar assembly election when Lalu Yadav won a brute majority. BJP had raised
the issues of rigging in EVM Machines after it lost 2009 general elections
badly & Lalu had similar complaints when JDU/BJP swept Bihar in 2010. Now
Mayawati, Harish Rawat & Arvind Kejriwal are point figures towards EVM
frauds after they suffered heavy losses in recently concluded assembly elections.
Can a machine be tempered with? The answer is YES. Any machine whether it is EVM or German Enigma machine can be tempered with. There is a constant battle with security team & hacking team all over the world. Indian Election commission is well known for its integrity & strictness. It is still one of the strongest pillars of Indian Democracy. Election Commission has been constantly upgrading the EVM’s security measures and the EVMs are kept in very tight security after the completion of polls. Even observers of political parties keep an eye on the Strong Rooms where EVMs are kept. So, it is highly unlikely that EVMs can be tempered on a very large scale so that BJP wins 325 seats and BSP just 19 seats.EVMs have been banned in matured democracies like USA (more than 30 states out of 50 states) without the paper trail, Germany and Netherland (completely). But their electoral size is very small compared to India. Once L K Advani wrote that since Germany has banned it, we should also ban it. Why should be dependent on western countries for guidance? We are the largest democracy and our huge electoral population is more than Europe & North America combined. Yes, we need improvement like Voter Verified Paper audit trail (VVPAT). VVPAT has been implemented at some places and it is likely that in coming years this paper trail system will be implemented throughout the country.
EVMs were used in 2004 for the first time in whole India. Since then two Central Governments (NAD in 2004 and UPA in 2014) have lost powers. Many state Governments have lost power in state. Left lost in West Bengal after 34 years. If EVM could have been rigged so easily, they would not have lost elections. Arvind Kejriwal had twitted about possible rigging of EVMs 5 days before 2015 Delhi assembly election but when he won unpresented 67 seats out of 70, he never talked about it later. BJP’s spokesperson GVL Narasimha wrote a book titled “Democracy At Risk! Can We Trust Our Electronic Voting Machines?”, with a foreword by L K Advani. But
they kept mum after winning majority in 2014 elections. Where was Mayawati when
she won in 2007 UP election with the same EVMs? She can’t still digest that BJP
won in Muslim dominated constituencies. Is there a law or rule that Muslims can’t
vote for BJP? Now Arvind Kejriwal is saying that BJP/Akalis rigged the EVMs so
that Congress can win Punjab. This is the height of hypocrisy.
Why only losers complain about EVMs and when the same party win the election, they defend EVMs. This is the politics of Convenience or Looser's Syndrome.
