In 52 BC, Julias Caesar’s 60,000 Roman
Army was fighting more than 220,000 soldiers of Gaulic tribes in Battle of
Alesia (France). Romans were on verge of
loss but suddenly Caesar joined the fight in trademark red dress with last
reserves. By seeing their leader fighting with them, Roman soldiers moral
became high & they defeated four time larger army of Gauls.
Exactly the same thing happened in UP. Indian Prime Minster Modi camped in Varanasi for 3 days and did 2 back to back road shows in Varanasi itself. The message was clear. He was the face of BJP & would take credit for any victory or loss. He was fighting election shoulder to shoulder with normal BJP workers. His road shows was also very well received in minorities dominated areas also. He was leading from front and achieved victory of unthinkable margin. I don’t think that even BJP would have not imagined that they would win 312 seats on their own. No PM after Indira Gandhi had won so comprehensively in state elections like this after completing half of their term at Center. People has tremendous aspiration & they have a faith that Modi will fulfill their aspirations.Even a Modi like leader needs a capable Party machinery. BJP was in disarray in UP for last 13 years till 2014 and Amit Shah overhauled BJP Machinery in 2014 and now in 2017. Even if you don’t like Amit Shah, you can’t ignore him. He played the caste card, development card and communal card very well. He didn’t hesitate to give around 100 seats to turncoats from other parties. He was very ruthless and foe example even 7 times sitting MLA & popular leader Shyamdeo Roy Chaudhuri from Varanasi South was denied the ticket.
We should closely look the seats & vote percentage tally in UP. BJP’s minor allay Apna Dal won 9 seats (out of 12) and running Samajwadi Party ally Congress won just 7 seats (out of 105 seats). Bahujan Samajwadi party was decimated again like 2014 Lok Sabha election. A vote share of 41.4% (of NDA) is more than enough for a landslide in a triangular contest. There are many seats In Varanasi, Agara, Lucknow & elsewhere where BJP’s vote is more than combined vote share of SP/Congress & BSP.Why BJP won? There are several factors. BJP has shed its pro rich, pro urban & pro trader party in UP by many measures like free LPG Cylinder scheme, pumping more money in MANREGA, Jan Dhan Scheme, Demonetization, soaps to farmers & pregnant women, crop insurance Scheme etc. People (mainly poor & lower middle class) suffered tremendously during Demonetization but still they voted for Modi. Why? Poor people thought that it will hurt rich & capitalist more than them.
BJP created a strong rainbow coalition of upper caste, non-Yadav OBC, non-Jatav SC. OBCs has got power & money due to green revolution & liberalization but Yadavs have corned a great portion of wealth & power among OBC. Same is the case with Jatavs among SCs. So there was a feeling of marginalization among non-Yadav OBC, non-Jatav SC voters. The basis of SP & Conges alliance was consolidation of Muslim votes. BSP supreme leader Mayawati remained public in every election that she had given 100+ tickets to Muslims. This created a feeling among many Hindus that there parties are doing minority appeasements. BJP took advantage of this feeling. Akhliesh may have emerged as no. 1 leader in SP but he ignored the power of Mulayam Singh Yadav. Even we can ignore Shivpal, Mulayam is too big to be sidelined. And giving 105 seats to Congress was a grave mistake. Even 70 seats to Congress would have been on higher side. Akhliesh may have revolted against old guards of UP but still SP was synonymous with Gunda Raj. He was against entry of Mukhtar Ansari in SP but he shielded rape accused Gayatri Prajapati. Mayawati failed to learn from her own success of 2007. Dalits have become inspirational and it is time to make “Sarvjan” coalition not “Bahujan” coalition.
You can fool some people for some time, all the people for some time, some people for all the time but not all the people for all the time. It’s a victory of Democracy, hard work, master strategy & sheer determination. Jai Hind Jai UP.
